Description

The original embroidery comes from Fjärdingslöv in the Skytt district, and is part of the collections at Trelleborg Museum. It’s embroidered freely and simplistically. The embroidery is marked KJD ANNO 1816. “IF” is embroidered next to both women, which may stand for Fjärdingslöv. The fabric is black. In Swedish, this pattern is called Hanrej, from the German hahnrei, which is the word for a castrated male (rooster). The word is used pejoratively in Danish about men whose wives have cheated on them. The motif of a man riding on a rooster can be found in catchpenny prints, paintings, and a number of wool embroideries.

Embroidered using one-sided satin stitch, stem stitch, split stitch, long and short stitch, and French knots.

The materials package contains: pre-drawn wool fabric, wool yarn, a paper pattern, a color image, stitch descriptions, and a needle. Fabric for the backing is not included but broadcloth and wadmal can be ordered from our shop. Yarn for the fringe is not included, we suggest you use leftover yarn or order yarn separately from our shop.
