Flemsh weaving

Flemish Tapestry is a form of gobelin weaving with linen warp and wool weft. Flemish tapestry has been woven in Skåne since the seventeenth century. In a castle setting, they mostly wove wall-hung gobelins. When peasant homes began to weave Flemish tapestry in the middle of the eighteenth century, they wove bench cushions, åkdynor (a cushion/pillow for riding in carriages), pillows, and bridal coverlets. The patterns mostly derived from the bible, catchpenny prints, and fairy tales. Our Flemish tapestry kits are patterns from historical examples in the archives of Hemslöjden i Skåne, and from museum collections in Skåne. We also sell weaving frames and gobelin bobbins. These can be found under Tools and Equipment.
